It rained yesterday. It rained and rained and rained. And after that, for good measure, it rained some more.
It had been quite pleasant all day until 5 minutes before I left work when someone turned on the big hairy tap in the sky. Then it cleared up for a while. Then about 8.30pm I noticed some rather spectacular and black looking clouds in the sky.
Then….oh my. Did it rain or did it rain. Well I can confirm that it did indeed rain. They said on the news today that the area where I live had two months worth of rain in 45 minutes. I reckon that’s quite a lot.
It rained for about 2 hours and a lot of that time was the sort of rain where you think multiple trolls and goblins are hammering in unison on the floor, walls, windows, roofs etc. Then it would pretend to stop for a couple of minutes and just when you think it was clearing up it would start bucketing down again.
I thought it was great until I realised my patio had turned into a pond. I’ve NEVER seen it like that before from just rainfall. It was just falling so fast it couldn’t drain. My patio was 3 inches deep in some places and I was getting slightly alarmed that it was creeping closer to the house. At that point (about 11pm) I went paddling and tried to bale some of it into the flower beds which I quickly realise was pointless.
Fortunately it stopped properly at about 11.30pm and I was able to start breathing again. (I knew it wouldn’t actually make it into the house, but I have airbricks under the house, and I wasn’t too thrilled about the thought of it going under there.

How does my garden grow? 
Wow! That’s quite a storm you got. Those pictures really tell the story. I had just read in the paper a few days ago, about some really awful flooding in the state of Texas. I think I’d have been worried too, if the patio turned into a pool! I don’t know – what are airbricks?
Nez sez: Hi Jackie. Instead of having a concrete ground floor, I have wooden floorboards. This is known as a ‘floating floor’ so there is a space from the outside ground to the inside ground level so the airbricks let the air circulate. I think that’s right anyway. (They also let wasps get in to build nests sometimes. grrr – happened last year!)
There was a fair amount of flood damage in the area where I live, but not in the town where I live fortunately. Mother nature can be a scary beast sometimes eh?

Nez sez: Ooh – they were! They were great – until they started throwing down the rain – then I didn’t like them quite so much. I don’t think I’ve ever seen clouds quite so dramatic looking in the UK. I couldn’t believe how black they were…
Yikes! Those are scary clouds! Were we chatting during all that build up? No wonder you were nervous!
Nez sez: Yeppum – thems from when we woz chatting. The clouds were ACE. It was just the rain that followed that had me stressing.
